Can You Treat Gout With Baking Soda?
People suffering from gout will no doubt be ready to try any possible remedy they hear that could ease their suffering or completely cure them of gout altogether. There are many treatments and supplements touted to eliminate gout for good, but of course, if all of them work, then practically nobody would be suffering from gout on a long-term basis anymore. It is always best to take a good hard look at the suggested treatments and do some research on how effective they really are.
One of the wondrous substances said to be powerful in the fight against gout is baking soda. Yes, good old baking soda, which practically everyone has in his or her cupboards. “Baking soda as a gout cure, though?” you are probably asking right now. “But how does it work?”
Gout takes place when there is a high level of uric acid in the body. You can avoid having a high level of uric acid by taking the right medication and also by modifying your diet so you no longer consume any food items that are high in purine, which produce uric acid. Gout is also affected by the amount of acid and alkaline in the body. As you’ve probably learned back in science class, a pH level below 7 means it is acidic while a pH level higher than 7 is alkalinic. When your body’s pH level falls, there is a higher risk of you developing gout because the uric acid in your body becomes less soluble. A higher pH level, on the other hand, dissolves existing uric acid crystals and prevents any uric acid from crystallizing.
Baking soda plays a role in curing gout because it is an alkalizing agent, and the best part is that it is affordable and readily available. You can take this directly mixed with water; half a teaspoon stirred in six fluid ounces of water should be sufficient enough. As another alternative, you can also buy empty gel capsules and pour baking soda into each one, taking it as you would any vitamin or supplement.
Remember that baking soda can have some side effects; its high sodium content will require you to cut salt from your diet while you’re taking it, and you might experience some dizziness, weakness, and loss of appetite, plus you have to contend with baking soda’s unpleasant flavor. Don’t forget to consult your physician first if you will be taking baking soda. It is still not widely accepted in the medical world and moreover, it should not be your only solution against gout.
