CHRONIC GOUT
Getting to Know Chronic Gout
In the old days, people believed that gout is a disease that only kings and wealthy people can suffer from. This is so because many their affluence gave them access to hoards of food and alcohol. There is some truth to this because those who eat and drink excessively will usually have problems with their uric acid levels – which are the cause of chronic gout – but it is not true that only the rich and famous suffer from this dreadful disease. Over the years, studies have shown that anyone can develop uric acid crystals around their joints and eventually end up having gout; although this disease is more commonly observed among males and older people.
Gout attacks refer to the pain felt by people who have high levels of uric acid in their bloodstream. They usually start to have gout attacks when there is a buildup of uric acid crystals in and around their joints. Gout attacks are can develop into acute gout then into chronic gout. The worst case is when chronic gout progresses into chronic tophaceous gout, wherein tophi have developed around the joints. It is typical for chronic tophaceous gout patients to have tophi erupting from the joints in their big toe and fingers.
There is no observed difference between chronic gout symptoms and those of chronic tophaceous gout. In both cases, patients would feel soreness and pain in their joints – most frequently in their big toe. However, the pain may be felt in practically any joint in the body, including those in the ear and spine. Patients may also notice swelling and redness in their joints. In the most severe cases, sufferers have difficulty moving their joints and are forced to stay in bed.
To help patients feel less pain, their doctors will recommend a certain kind of chronic gout treatment. There are many kinds of treatments available, including both synthetic and natural options. For chronic gout, doctors might recommend long-term treatments with allopurinol with regular intervals. Allopurinol helps in reducing the development of uric acid crystals. They might also prescribe drugs that help in increasing the excretion of uric acid, like probenecid. To help treat chronic tophaceous gout, doctors might resort to recommending the removal of tophi through surgery.
Having chronic gout is never an appealing thought. We must remember that not only the rich and famous are at risk. Anyone who does not observe a healthy diet and has a habit of drinking alcohol excessively is always at risk of suffering from this awfully painful disease.
