The Development of Gout Crystals

Gout is one of the most debilitating diseases induced by excessive levels of uric acid in the body. Large amounts of uric acid can easily develop into crystalline deposits in the joints and connective tissues and are referred to as gout crystals. In cases of pseudogout, the uric acid deposits are called pseudogout crystals.

A gout crystal will not typically have a prominent presence in our system however; gout crystals can easily pile up, especially when the process of eliminating uric acid from the body is impaired. This condition can lead to the development of gout or gouty arthritis. The precipitation of these crystals can happen in any joint of the body, even in your ears.

Deposits of gouty crystals have also been noticed to develop in the cartilage, tendon sheaths, tendons, walls of bursae, and in ligaments. Among sufferers, it is not unusual to find gout crystals in the kidney and cutaneous tissues other than around their joints. Crystal deposits can also develop in the hips, shoulders, and spine joints. In severe cases, uric acid crystal deposits can develop into tophi. Patients suffering from chronic gouty arthritis are more likely to have tophi that can erupt through skin.

The symptoms of gout disease include tenderness, a sudden onset of pain, warmth, swelling, and redness in the affected area. Diagnosis of this disease can involve the identification of the uric crystals in synovial fluid and the collection of a gout crystals image. Acute attacks can be treated with non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs, colchicines, and allopurinol or uricosuric drugs. This painful disease can affect both men and women but is found to be more common among men. It is rare for young people to suffer from this disease but if a person develops gout before reaching the age of 30, the damage can be remarkably severe.

But what causes gout crystals to develop? High levels of uric acid in the bloodstream are often caused by decreased renal excretion. Increase production of uric acid can also be caused by an upward surge in the turnover of nucleoprotein in patients who suffer from lymphoma, leukemia, and other related diseases. It can also happen as an abnormality caused by obesity. The increased intake of foods rich in purine can also cause the buildup of gout crystals. Organ meat, asparagus, anchovies, meat broths and gravies, herring, mussels, sardines, mushrooms are some examples of purine rich foods.
