by Kathy Nelson

In most people gout only effects one joint at a time, those which get a lot of use such as your big toe or elbow joint. Gout treatment means different things to different people, some rely on medication, others prefer natural treatments.

Gout treatment needs to address not only the pain but the inflammation or swelling of the joints. There are many medical solutions that seem to treat either the pain or the inflammation. Treating both while staying lucid and active is the ideal solution.

As our nation becomes more wealthy and our lives become busier our diets are getting worse. Gout is a disease that is directly affected by what you eat. If you eat a diet high in purines and don’t drink enough fluids, then your chances of getting gout are high. If you already have gout then your attacks will worsen from your poor dietary habits.

As for medications to help treat gout, the most common types are NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), colchicines, corticosteroids, ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone), allopurinol, probenecid and sulfinpyrazone. Of all of these the most common is the NSAIDS, which can be prescribed by a doctor for treating acute cases gout.

Treating gout pain is the first step. This will usually be done by taking massive does of Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs. Once the pain has subsided, many make the mistake of stopping to take their medication because they start to feel better. This can cause gout to flare up again very quickly. Your doctor will normally tell you to carry on taking the medication for another 2 days after the pain goes away.

Even though they work for most people, NSAIDS are not the only treatment available for gout attacks. If for some reason you can’t take NSAIDS then there is no need to despair – there are other treatments available. Ask your doctor if it is possible to see a gout specialist.

Taking medication for gout is not a “one size fits all” situation. Different people will benefit from different medication doses. Some will have more relief if they take massive doses at the time of their worst attacks while others take smaller, monthly doses.

Before you decide which type of medication to take and how often to take it, it is best if you try different types and different doses. Make sure that you keep a diary of how you feel during each treatment so your doctor can give you the best treatment.

by Kathy Nelson

If you suffer from gout then you should be changing your diet right now. Your diet, including your intake of fluids (alcoholic and non alcoholic), is affecting every part of your body including your joints where the gout pain appears.

The general consensus is that if your diet is high in purines (a white, crystalline compound, C5H4N4, from which is derived a group of compounds including uric acid, xanthine, and caffeine) and protein then you are more likely to suffer with gout. Gout is caused by a build up of uric acid and when purines break down they form uric acid. When your body has more uric acid than it can deal with, little crystals made up of uric acid will form in your joints and cause pain and inflammation.

It is therefore important that a person who suffers from gout avoid foods which contain high levels of protein or purines . If you eat foods with too much protein or purine in them they will then increase the levels of uric acid in the body, which can further aggravate the condition.

Is all that beer and red meat you eat worth the gout pain that you are experiencing? You need to take your gout diet seriously and realize that the more notice you take of the food you put into your mouth the greater your chance of reducing your pain from gout is. Remember, it is your diet which is causing you pain.

Potatoes, corn and peas are just three of the vegetables that you should be avoiding all together or at least reducing your intake. It can be hard to change your diet all at once, so make a plan to reduce your intake of potatoes by 50% within 2 weeks and altogether by 8.

While your intake of meat and vegetables will greatly effect your, gout another thing you can do is drink more water. If you drink alcohol (especially beer) then greatly reduce that intake and replace it with water.

Many people will look at the list of things to remove from their diet so their gout can improve and just think it is too much so they do nothing. Pick one thing that is bad for you and start off by reducing then removing it from your diet completely. Once you have conquered one food then you can move onto the next one. You need to make lifestyle changes rather than just changing your diet for a week or two.

By making changes to your dietary habits you will discover that you are better able to control the condition. Over time, not only will the symptoms and attacks associated with this condition be greatly reduced, but you will feel much better about yourself, as well.

There are a few symptoms of gout that always occur. Many times it can be difficult to diagnosis gout due to the similarity of other illnesses. Gout is a type of arthritis and mainly affects the joints. Some common symptoms include swelling, inflammation, redness and pain. The most common joint for gout is the big toe though it can affect any other joints. When treating gout methods involve treating the symptoms as well as the actually cause.

Ignoring gout can have some serious implications as it can lead to kidney and joint damage. Goat occurs because of an increase in uric acid in the blood stream. The kidneys usually remove uric acid from the blood so that it is excreted during urination. However for some reason, whether your kidneys are not working properly or you just have a high production rate of uric acid, gout will occur. The vast majority of men over age 40 are affected by gout. Gout affects men much more then women.

Symptoms of gout tend to occur very quickly, from between 12 to 24 hours after an increase in uric acid levels. Though gout occurs swiftly it can be very difficult to go away. The most common symptoms include but are not limited to tenderness in the joint, hotness in the joint, red or shiny skin at the joint, severe pain and joint swelling. Some other minor symptoms include slight fever, nausea and loss of appetite.

There are many medications used to treat gout. It is possible to use colchines that block the production of uric acid. You can use steroids to build up your muscle strength in the joint. Drinking a lot of water can dilute the uric acid in the blood. NSAIDs or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications and over the counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen are recommended. Aspirin should be avoided at all cost as it produces more uric acid in the blood.

The best treatment foe gout is to prevent it. This can be done by using medication that causes the kidneys to remove more uric acid from the blood or reduce your body’s production of uric acid. A natural remedy, without medication, is to monitor your diet and avoid specific foods. Certain foods contain high levels of purines. Purines are broken down in the body and become uric acid.

In order to properly diagnosis gout your doctor may need to perform certain tests including a full medical history, joint fluid test and blood test. The one test that can completely confirm gout is the joint fluid test. Though this will require some anesthesia and a long needle.

Definition- Gout is defined as chronic joint inflammation and swelling, caused by excessive uric acid forming crystals in bloodstream of the joint connections. Post-menopausal woman as well as middle-aged men between age 40 and 50 years have greater tendency to suffer from the condition. Gout attacks are more common at midnight as well as in the early hours of the morning. Luckily, wonderful natural cures for gout are available.

Common gout symptoms- Common gout symptoms are terribly pain, swelling and tenderness from the knees down. The pain is often compared to standing on needles and pins. The big toe areas are usually targeted by the condition.

Healthy diet- Gout treatment should begin internally with the initiation of a healthy diet. This will not only manage and treat the condition effectively but also ultimately assist with long-term curing of gout. Purine controlled diets with high protein intake are most recommended. Rich foods in the form of meat, bread, fish, eggs and meat extracts are on the avoid list. Some veggies have the potential of significantly increasing the condition such as mushrooms, lentils, peas, beans and spinach. Berry fruits are all highly recommended including straw-and goose berries. Make sure that these fruits form part of your diet. Drink plenty of water to ensure hydration. Alcohol especially red wine, beer and port is a big no-no.

Activity- Activity in the form of regular exercise not only prevents but managed and greatly reduces symptoms associated with the condition. Muscles are strengthened, joints lubricated and stiffness reduced with proper exercise. Please seek the advice of a medical professional before structuring and starting an exercise regime.

Detoxing- Flushing toxins and acid out of your body is essential to clear your bloodstream and liver for elimination of gout and kidney stones regularly associated with the gout.

Recommended foods- Rice, cereal, nuts, seeds and cheese are delicious foods that are highly recommended to add the balance required for your diet.

Natural remedies- Natural remedies can take the form of dietary changes with the inclusion of gout relieving foods, herbal and homeopathic remedies. Cherries either fresh or canned are wonderful treatment and ultimately a cure for the condition. Consumption of approximately 20 cherries a day should be sufficient. Bananas, apples and limes are all excellent gout treatments to be consumed twice daily.

Bathes- Warm baths are ideal methods of relaxing tired and aching muscles. Epsom salt and charcoal bathes have incredible anti-inflammatory properties. Scoop 500gm Epsom salt in lukewarm water. Leave the gout patient to soak in the salty water 3 times per week. Charcoal bathes are just as effective in treating the condition. Add cup charcoal powder to warm water and beat into paste. Gently rub paste on painful area. Pour lukewarm water over pasted area and leave to soak for thirty to sixty minutes.

Gout is medical condition that occurs when there is a build of uric acid within the body. It is a type of rheumatic illness that affects the joints. Uric acid is formed when purines breakdown. Purines are contained within a lot of different foods and they are also within human tissue. So it is essential to know foods to avoid for gout.

Sufferers know they are going to have an attack of gout as they get pain in the joint of the big toe. This can then spread to the wrists, ankles, knees, elbows and more. When it does happen it is due to a build up uric acid. This can happen when a person’s body can’t eliminate the purines within the body or when someone consumes too many purine rich foods.

Gout is so painful because uric acid crystals form in the fluid within the joints. These crystals make moving the joints very difficult and they can also swell up. This then leads to an attack of gout which can leave sufferers bed ridden. Anyone who suffers from gout needs to know foods to avoid for gout so they can steer clear of this painful condition.

Obviously foods which have high levels of purines need to be avoided. Purine rich foods are things such as liver and kidneys and other offal. Mussels, some alcoholic drinks such as port, dried beans and peas can also bring on an attack. Really anyone who has a very rich diet which is high in meat can put themselves at risk of gout.

If anyone who is prone to gout eats too many of these types of food they start to get painful joints. Due to quick rises in uric acid this can sometimes occur within a few hours. To combat this anyone who suffers from gout should know how crucial their diet is. When you don’t know which foods to avoid for gout you can run the risk of frequent attacks.

Whilst it is virtually impossible to cut one type of food out of your diet forever, they can be avoided. Anyone looking to keep their gout under control needs to know how to maintain a healthy diet. One that is low in purine rich foods and high in healthy food is the best. Follow a diet like this and you will be gout free for longer.

by Ron Horner

Tired of painful gout attacks? Here are some alternative ideas for you to consider using to assist you in reducing any current gout pain and lower the likelihood of future gout attacks.

Another powerful remedy to use in the fight against this disease is vitamin C. This potent vitamin helps keep uric acid in check. It helps the body put a stop to turning purines into uric acid.

Your body processes uric acid on a regular basis. The problem lies in when this process doesn’t function properly. This allows too many crystals to form and they can settle in your joints causing extreme gout pain.

Pineapples are very beneficial against gout pain. This is because of a property they contain called bromelain. This property is used for reducing inflammation. In fact, it is sometimes used to help people with swelling after surgery.

While bromelain is an excellent way to help treat gout, you should use with caution is you are on Coumadin or aspirin. Seek your doctors advice on whether this supplement is for you as it has blood thinning properties.

Because potassium helps make uric acid into a solution versus crystals, potassium is very helpful in getting rid of gout. The government recommended daily allowance is 3500mg per day. Adding potassium rich foods to your diet will help you achieve the benefits you are looking for.

Proper hydration is very important for gout patients. When you are properly hydrated, uric acid has a harder time crystallizing in the body. This crystallization is what causes most of the pain in your joints, due to the damage and swelling that is caused by your body trying to correct the damage to your joints. So drink plenty of water.

While you do not have to completely discard foods that can cause gout from your diet, at least eat them in moderation. Reducing the amount of high purine foods in your diet will lower the extra amounts of uric acid you produce. Because most of these foods are not healthy to begin with, you will most likely not only get rid of gout pain, you will also probably lose weight, which will have an accumulative factor in helping you reduce the likelihood of future attacks.

Grapes are incredible natural treatments for gout. They are very good at helping you reduce or eliminate painful gout symptoms. While grapes alone will not get rid of this painful condition, they will greatly benefit you combine them with other treatment therapies.

The great thing about grapes are they have quite a few different ways they can help you get rid of gout. Some of these include water, quercitin, potassium, vitamin C, and anthocyanins, just to name a few.

Grapes use quercitin to help treat gouty arthritis. Quercitin is a powerful flavonoid. Flavonoids help address the symptoms of this painful disease. They are able to do this because they contain anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation is the main reason for gout pain.

Inflammation occurs when your body cannot properly manage your uric acid levels. The excess crystals gather in your joints and they irritate and inflame your joints. Quericitin helps work on reducing this inflammation.

Grapes are great for helping with hydration. They consist of around 2/3 water. Eating water dense foods help you in fighting gout pain. When you are properly hydrated your body is able to help you eliminate extra uric acid crystals more efficiently.

Potassium is a great component of treating gout pain. Potassium treats this disease by liquefying uric acid. This enables your kidneys to get rid of it more effectively. One serving of grapes will provide you with approximately 5% of the potassium you need on a daily basis. You can help increase this number by adding several more fruits to your diet such as cherries and pineapples. Fruits are a major part of any successful gout therapy program.

Grapes are able to assist in reducing or eliminating gout pain because they are filled with vitamin C. Grapes consist of approximately 20% of your daily needs for this potent vitamin. Vitamin C is very effective at fighting this arthritic condition.

Arthritis and Rheumatism (2005;52:1843-7) published a scientific report that showed supplementing your diet with Vitamin C lowered uric acid around 10% after a two month period. The supplementation was at 500mg per day. By controlling this acid it can help reduce your frequency and intensity of attacks.

Anthocyanins enable grapes to help reduce painful swelling during an acute attack. These flavonoids reduce inflammation and the darker the grape, the greater amount the grapes will contain. So it is preferable to choose a darker grape, although any variety will help you if you do not have access to the best kinds.

Grapes are so important when you are trying to treat gout naturally. However, they are best used when combined with other fruits. Many fruits, such as cherries, contain a lot of these healthy properties that help you get rid of gout pain.

by Yote Staple

Gout is one of the most painful types of arthritis. It is more common than most people believe and affects thousands each year. Those who had suffered through gout understand how painful and discomforting it is.

The medical cause of gout is due to a congenital disorder of uric acid metabolism. The uric acid deposits enter the joint areas, causing what we know as gout. Gout swells up the joint area and causes pain to the area affected.

As a disease, gout is curable, with various types of cure for gout options to which those afflicted with the condition could resort to. A cure for gout could come in the form of FDA approved drugs, or could come in the form of home remedies, which, as a class of cure for gout, have shown promising signs as remedies for gout. Here two of the home remedy classes of cure for gout.

Cherries have been noted by many to greatly lessen the pain that comes with gout. They also believe it lessens the swelling associated with gout. Although there have been no scientific stakes made at these claims, there are thousands who use cherries to treat gout.

No real argument there, as the testimonies of cherry’s’ effectiveness as a cure for gout comes from gout patients themselves.

A charcoal bath has also been a remedy used by many who suffer from gout and it’s symptoms. Charcoal is known to draw toxins from the body so it is believed a charcoal bath can draw the harmful toxins of gout to be treated this way.

As most gout, if not all, conditions start with the big toe or toes, one could soak ones foot, or both ones feet in a charcoal concoction, made of half a cup of charcoal powder and water, mixed to a pasty consistency. By then, one could gradually add hot water, while ones foot is submerged in the mix. Soaking ones foot in this mixture for about thirty to sixty minutes is known to greatly benefit gout conditions.

These are two effective home remedies to gout which do not call for surgery or any prescriptive drugs. If you or someone you know suffer from gout, these two remedies should be tried before resorting to other gout treatments.

Gout is caused by the buildup of too much uric acid in the body. Uric acid comes from the breakdown of substances called purines. Purines are found in all of your body’s tissues. They are also in many foods, such as liver, dried beans and peas, and anchovies.

In the normal flow of life your body dissolves the uric acid that you intake via food and drink, your kidneys work to filter uric acids out of your body. Now if you have a kidney disease, have had one removed or maybe have had a kidney transplanted then you may well be suffering with gout as a side effect.

Gout is associated with uric acid , to be totally honest it is only when the level of uric acid reaches levels that your kidneys can’t clean that you will have problems. This is one of the reasons why people will any sort of kidney problems should be careful as to what they eat, the more foods you eat with purines in the more likely it is you will have gout.

As with most things eating a few foods which are high in purine is fine, but when you start to overdo it your body will let you know it. The medical term for high levels of uric acid is hyperuricemia, but that doesn’t automatically mean that you have gout, it does mean however that you should be taking even more notice of what you are eating.

Men usually eat more red meat than the women in their lives and that is part of the reason why the incidences of gout are much higher in men than they are in women. If a man has a relative who has gout then he should take extra precautions as family history is another contributing factor.

You may notice that your big toe feels really hot at first and then the toe may look swollen and red. Then when you are in bed that night you will be woken up with an excruciating pain in your big toe, it will usually hurt just to have the bed sheet touching your toe. Gout attacks are painful and yet it is all caused by tiny uric acid crystals.

Gout is generally a controllable disease with application of proper treatment and dietary care. No matter how much you love the foods that are high in purines, such as shellfish and game, the pain of a gout attack should be enough to remind you why you have to give them up. Change your diet, get some exercise and reduce your weight and your gout attacks should become few and far between.
